Honey Do(c)
I get to celebrate my son’s first birthday this month and it’s amazing how quickly his freshman year flew by. Frankly, I don’t even remember the first few months but I’m certain they happened.
When Doc was born, we had heard the stories from friends that “they just send you home and you have no clue what to do.” That was clear the minute we stepped out of the hospital when I quickly realized that I had absolutely no idea how to strap him into his car seat.
Crow’s flight, we live less than a mile from the hospital but we must’ve stopped at least three times on the way home. “His head seems wrong!” I said to my wife. “Well slow down!” She hollered back.
While most memories are fleeting, I’m thankful for the talented Yvette Michelle for capturing such amazing pictures of Doc as a newborn. Sure, my wife and I have enough pictures on our phone to justify purchasing a terabyte on Dropbox, but you’ve got to get some professional shots done- and I’m glad we did. She was happy to work our first child into the shoot as well- Loop the Dog.
The uncertainty and even resentment that we watched our dog go through has come full circle today as the two are beginning to chase one another around our house. From melancholy to Doc & Collie- that dynamic alone has been a fun story for our house.
Every day that passes, Doc gets closer to being able to keep up and I can just see the life returning to Loop as he sees his friend come to be. There have been a few of Loop’s herding tendencies already shine through in Doc’s crawling stage. Yep, ole Loop is liking this situation.
Thinking back on the year, there are so many incredible memories and Doc is already teaching me so much- but he has been particularly helpful in an unlikely way. Communication between his parents.
Pretty sure having a kid is the most effective way for my wife to tell what she is thinking. “Doc, do you want Daddy to give you a diaper change?”
It’s hilarious but it’s true- since we have become parents, my ability to understand my wife has skyrocketed. I do try and remain on my toes- jumping before she says jump, but when I inevitably miss an opportunity to help out she now has an incredibly clear way to say “Step up.”
It’s not just the diapers and the baths that this trick is used though, I think we’ve both silently agreed that we stumbled onto gold. Yes, we’ve incorporated this into most areas of our life and it has translated the Honey-Do list from Greek to Dr. Seuss.
“Doc, we need to update the laundry room, huh?”
“Doc, do you want Chick-Fil-A for lunch?”
But, it’s not all one sided, yall. Doc does indeed like Chick-Fil-A just like his momma, but this year Doc has also taken an interest in walking through Lowes on Saturday’s, seeing what’s new in Academy, grilling steaks at least once a week, and he can’t wait to watch the Master’s.
Thanks Doc, you’re easy to spoil.
